Rauschenberg: Express. On the Move

In conjunction with the international celebration of the centenary of the birth of Robert Rauschenberg (1925–2008) and with the support of the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, the museum is presenting a special display focused on Express (1963), one of the artist’s most important creations, which belongs to the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection. 
Curated by Marta Ruiz del Árbol, the museum's senior curator of Modern Painting, this presentation offers new perspectives on this key work within the artist's career. It explores both the sources of its complex iconography and the experimental drive that led Rauschenberg to eliminate boundaries between disciplines and collaborate with creators from fields such as dance, performance, visual arts and science. It also centres on the importance of the work in establishing the international reputation of the artist, who received the Grand Prix for Painting at the Venice Biennale in 1964. 
This new installation is one event in a year of international activities and exhibitions that revisit Rauschenberg from a present-day perspective, highlighting his influence on contemporary artists and his firm belief in art as a tool for individual and social transformation.
