Following the restoration of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the museum is showing the results and conclusions of the technical study, sponsored by Asisa, of one of the landmark works in the collection. The display highlights the most interesting aspects of Caravaggio’s creative process and way of working.

The technical study involved using various methods such as X-radiography, infrared reflectography, analysis of materials and exhaustive photographic documentation to determine the technique employed, the composition of the materials and their distribution in the different layers, and the alterations made by the artist.

As a result of the restoration, the movement of the volumes, the subtlety of the flesh tones and the delicacy of the textures can now be appreciated. Without the layers of varnish, the painting has come to life and is much closer to its original appearance.
