The Thyssen-Bornemisza collection, originally private, has been the heritage of all Spaniards since 1993. The recent inclusion of the word Nacional in the museum's name highlights the public nature of the collection and puts it on a par with other major Spanish institutions such as the Museo Nacional del Prado and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.
