The second block of the course Routes around the collection, devoted to exploring the history of art through the museum’s collection, will focus on the artistic movements that arose between the 18th century and the early decades of the 20th century. Starting with pre-Revolutionary French painting and Romanticism, the programme consists of five monthly sessions. These sessions will analyse the factors leading to the emergence of movements such as Realism and Impressionism, which focused on the perception of transience and on modern life in a context in which photography fostered new ways of understanding, structuring and representing reality.
This module of the course also addresses the role of industrialisation, urban growth and political instability in the emergence of Expressionism, concluding with Cubism’s fragmentation of the image and abandonment of traditional perspective, which paved the way for the new pictorial languages of the 20th century.
