Into India. South Asian Paintings from the San Diego Museum of Art

The curator of Asian Art, San Diego Museum of Art who has curated the exhibition explains the key concepts of Into India and talks about a selection of works. The exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to appreciate the entire evolution of Indian painting from the 12th to the mid-19th centuries through 106 paintings, prints and manuscripts. The works on display are drawn from nearly two thousand paintings, largely assembled by Edwin Binney 3rd and bequeathed to The San Diego Museum of Art upon his death in 1986.

The exhibition was organised into four thematic sections that also follow a chronological order, starting in the 12th century with some early examples of manuscript tradition in the autochthonous style, and concluding in the 19th century with the transferral of Mughal imperial power to the Raj, the British system of colonial rule.
