The museum, in collaboration with Caimán Cuadernos de Cine, has organised a film cycle that explores the influence of Vilhelm Hammershøi on this medium over the course of six sessions, with a chronological span from the early decades of the 20th century to the present day.
The first screening offers an introduction to the life and work of this Danish painter through a documentary in which the British actor and comedian Michael Palin reconstructs Hammershøi’s biography in cities such as London, Amsterdam and Copenhagen. Next, the programme highlights his influence on directors such as Carl Theodor Dreyer with a screening of Dreyer’s debut film, The President (1919), and Gertrude (1964), his last full-length title, with the aim of singling out formal and argumental connections.
The series is completed with Winter Light (1963) by Ingmar Bergman, Babbette's Feast (1987) by Gabriel Axel, and The Danish Girl (2015) by Tom Hooper, all films that connect with Hammershøi’s interiors and landscapes, his use of light and the Denmark of his time.
