Discovering Venus

Detalle del procedimiento de limpieza realizado en la pintura “Venus y Cupido”, obra de Peter Paul Rubens

The deterioration of the varnish on the painting Venus and Cupid made it difficult to properly appreciate its hues and dulled the luminosity that Rubens had intended it to have.

This was particularly evident in the areas of flesh, where the varnish had lost its transparency and had taken on a yellowish tinge and greater opacity, significantly hindering the perception of colour.

Removing deteriorated varnish is a fundamental stage in any restoration process. Careful and controlled work by the conservator makes it possible to return the picture’s surface to a state closer to the artist’s original idea.
